He recalls how his work ethic developed from balancing childcare for his younger stepsiblings and working at his stepfather’s restaurant during junior high and high school. Young also mentions the surprising origin of his great-grandfather's poultry shop in San Francisco, and how his parents moved to Los Angeles due to their families’ disapproval of their marriage. Young describes his experience with assimilation and Asian American identity, his academic and social progress at LA Valley College and Cal State LA, and meeting his wife in the final semester of his undergraduate studies. He discusses marrying his wife and the birth of his daughter and son, facing housing discrimination in Alhambra and San Gabriel, and feeling stifled by employers during his career as an engineer. He shares how his health crises, losing his job, and becoming a parent and grandparent altered his priorities in life, and concludes his interview with the advice to pace oneself, pursue one’s passion or aptitude, and appreciate the present moment.</text>
