Professional Development Opportunities

ABSWGLA has supported professional development by providing scholarships and professional networking opportunities. 

Providing scholarships for Black students enrolled in Social Work Master's programs in local universities, which were funded through annual luncheons and donations. 

The 1st Scholarship Luncheon “A tribute to Black Social Workers and Educators,” was held in 1981. Invited speakers included Maxine Waters and Dr. James Bush. Awardees included Dr. Shirley Better, Dr. Johnny D. Hampton, Dr. Alex J. Norman, Dr. Barbara J. Solomon, and dr. Josephine E. Yelder. 

Other professional development opportunities include annual retreats, symposiums, and conferences. The Chapter participated in quarterly steering committee meetings with the California Association of Black Social Workers (CABSW) and the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW).
