In 1950, after earning his B.A. in English from UCLA, Weisburd enrolled in creative writing courses at Los Angeles State College, where he studied under Thomas McGrath and met fellow emerging poets including Henri Coulette and Gene Frumkin. He eventually became the editor of Statement magazine in 1954. In addition to the poetry and visual illustrations he published there, Weisburd contributed an essay titled, "The City That Outgrew its Air," which braided together his literary and environmental interests. Statement continues to be published annually at Cal State LA to this day, and its entire history is digitally accesible via Special Collections and Archives.
