Jaylene Romero
Karim Illescas' experiences as a First-Generation Student and Mother
In this micro-documentary, Jaylene interviewed her mother, Karim. Karim immigrated from Guatemala to the U.S. at 11 years old to be reunited with her mother; however, she faced discrimination due to her not speaking English. As the years went on, Karim undoubtedly worked hard to push past these hardships and eventually got her Associates' degree. As a single mother, Karim has carried on traditions and passed on her hardworking nature to her daughters as a single mother of two teenage girls.
